BPS student writes and publishes first book

Sarah McFarlane, fourth-grade student at Bridges Preparatory School (BPS), wrote and published her first book.

Sarah and her mother, Samantha McFarlane, wrote Sarah Barah Learns to Ride a Bike. The book follows the main character, Sarah Barah, as she learns how to ride a bike she received as a birthday present. The book teaches readers the importance of bravery and perseverance.

For Sarah, writing a book is something she always wanted to do. “When I was younger, I loved to read books,” said Sarah. “I always wanted to one day write a book for others to read.”

Sarah was able to share her book with her classmates and friends. She visited a number of classrooms, read her book, and talked about being an author. Sarah and her mother also donated a copy of the book to each K-5 classroom so students can enjoy the book for years to come.

“There is nothing better than seeing a student fulfill a dream and do something they are passionate about,” said Dr. Leon Lee, BPS K-5 Principal. “I am so proud of Sarah for becoming a published author and can’t wait to see where her writing takes her in the future.”

This is Sarah’s first book, but certainly not her last. “My mother and I have decided to write a series about my life,” Sarah said. Learns to Ride a Bike will be the first book in The Sarah Barah Collection. “I would love to write a book about me dancing.”
